Upcoming Big Events

posted Jan 13, 2012 3:45 AM by Terence Vrugtman

Dear Scouts, Scouters and Parents

In the coming years there are 4 major events that will be here before you know it. This mails purpose is to highlight those events,  give you fair warning and give you a background to the events. Please note that 3 of the 4 will be age specific (based on the day before the event start).

 PLTU

Gilten PLTU (Patrol Leader Training Unit) is a leadership and skills training course run in Gauteng for Patrol Leaders with Adventurer and 15 years of age. This event is 10 days long and is run in December or January every year. Unlike other events in this mail, we can only send 4 scouts a year and they must be recommended by the Troop C.O.H. The cost for the course is currently R1500. There are no scheduled increases at the moment. PLTU is run and hosted at Gilwell, Florida.

 Senior Scout Adventure (Cederberg)

Senior Scout Adventure is a 10 day hike/adventure normally hosted in the Cederberg Mountain range in the Northern and Western Cape. This is an international event run every 2 years. The next Cederberg is in December 2012. The hike consists of +- 150km of hiking and different base/skill every day. The bases can be anything from rock climbing, marksmanship, diving, Dutch oven, electronics, parasailing, flying, ecology and gold panning. The last Cederberg was R2400 for hiking participants. To attend Cederberg you need to be 15 and hold First Class. As a troop we normally drive down in convoy as it adds to the experience.

 San-Jamb (South African National Jamboree)

The first South African National Jamboree in 10 years will be hosted in the freestate in December 2013. The camp is 10 days long and will host scouts from different countries. During the camp the scouts will cook, partake, sleep and live with other scouts from south africa and other countries. Each day will be a new one with different activities. The current estimated costs of San-Jamb is R2500 per scout. Scouts aged 11years and up will be allowed to go on San-Jamb.

 23rd World Scouts Jamboree

The 23rd World Scout Jamboree will be hosted by Japan and will feature 2 weeks of a never to be repeated adventure of a life time. The scouts will be camping in ‘troops’ made up of scouts from South africa. The WSJ is the largest youth event in the world with 42000 scouts camping at once from around the world. The South african contingient that goes will most likely have a pretour of a neighbouring country for a wekk before the event. The estimated cost for the 23rd WSJ is +- R35000 per scout. The WSJ will be in June/ July/ August 2015. Scouts that wish to go will need to have First Class and be 15 years old before the event. Scouts over the age of 18 wont miss out as they can go as an internation Service team member and run the activities for the scouts.

Weekend of the 11th November

posted Nov 11, 2011 6:16 AM by Terence Vrugtman

Dear Scouts, Scouters and Parents

Digging – This weekend on Saturday, 12 Nov, we are looking for assistance to dig a trench for Gilwell, at Gilwell. The trench is being dug for a new cable that needs to be laid for new security lights in the ‘Bundus’.

For all scouts working on adventurer, this can count as a part of the community service needed depending on the amount of hours that is needed.

Where: Gilwell, 911 Hamburg Road, Florida

Time: 09h00 till 16h00. You may come and go as it suits you.

Extra: come in clothes that can get dirty, closed shoes and bring a towel for a midday lake swim. Please can you also bring a spade, mining pick/garden hoe.

Remembrance day - It has come to that time of year again where we need to remember the past and those who gave their lives in the war. Remembrance day will take place on Sunday, 13th November 2011. It will start at 14h30. Address - Cnr 4th Avenue and Green Street, Florida Lake.

Please note that this is a formal event, meaning neatest and proudest Uniform. We will parade for about 30 minutes and then enjoy tea.

Trappers Trading

posted Aug 15, 2011 12:18 AM by Terence Vrugtman

Dear Parents and Scouts

Trappers Trading is an outdoor apparel store that sells just about anything that a scout would need or want for a Camp, Hike or River Adventure. Discovery Scouts Old Boy, John Black has managed to secure a 10% discount on anything bought (excluding GPS’s) by Cubs, Scouts, Parents and Scouters of first Discovery (only). This 10% off does only apply to North Gate and Fourways Branches only and has been approved by Richard Turkington, the store manager.

Trappers does also have sole retail of a local brand called Terra-Firma. Terra-Firma is a locally owned brand that is cheaper than the norm but offers the same, possible better, quality compared to all major imports. I personally recommend Terra-Firma Ruck Sacks, Sleeping bags and Torches over all other brands, especially for scouts.

If you are in the need to purchase new gear for camps and general scout events, please make sure you speak to Kent Jennings and I if you are unsure as to what you need. I have noticed that shops are taking advantage of scouts and promoting unneeded and expensive gear.

When you are shopping at Trappers Trading Fourways or Northgate and wish to take advantage of the 10% Discount, you will need to produce some sort of Discovery ID. This can be done by showing your green card (with Discovery written on the front), showing your scarf or wearing uniform (advertising scouts while you at it)

posted Jul 20, 2011 3:10 AM by Terence Vrugtman

Dear Parents, Scouts and Scouters

Reminder that Troop does start again on the 22nd July 2011. Please note that from this Friday we are in full summer uniform (Short if possible).

Please can all boy scouts come to troop early on Friday at 18h15 as we will be having a going up ceremony.

Going up Ceremony? This is a ceremony hosted by the troop scouter for a cub who is ready to join scouts. The cub is saluted at by the pack (as it’s the cubs last meeting). The cub then joins a patrol as a tenderfoot scout.

Parents welcome to watch.
